Coach Medina was asked about his past 4 seasons with coaching Natalie in his softball program and here’s what he had to say:

“Natalie has been on the varsity softball team since her freshman year.  She became our #2 pitcher and our staring 3rd baseman.  In her first year, she led the team in home runs (14) and was selected to the OCL 1st Team All League and we won the league title.

In her sophomore year, she led the team in home runs (12), helped us to win back to back Orange Coast League titles and was named to the 1st Team All League.

In her junior year we moved into the Golden West League and this is where Natalie started to bloom!  She became our #1 pitcher with a record of 16-1, ERA 1.08 with 30 walks and 79 Ks to win a 3rd consecutive league title.  Natalie was named Golden West League Pitcher of the Year and in playoffs Natalie exploded on the scene with pitching and winning all 5 CIF-SS playoff games!!

The best game was the Culver City Semi-Finals; Natalie only gave up 2 hits and 1 walk but the highlight of that game was Natalie hitting two bombs over the center field fence that put us into the Championship game against El Segundo.  And the rest is history…beating El Segundo 15-1, giving up 5 hits, 1 run and fielding her position in the circle with 5 put outs.  To win a league championship (10-0 undefeated) and go 5-0 in the playoffs plus to win the CIFSS Div 4 Championship all while losing her grandfather a week before is incredible!  Her team supported her through that tough time as this team is about family.  All of them grew up together through elementary school and middle school while playing against each other and their friends in travel ball and high school.

Godinez is about family – our teachers, our staff and our kids know that we will do everything to help them reach their goals because that’s what families do.

Natalie has been a part of the AVID program over the past 4 years and has worked in the community at various clean up events.  Natalie’s educational goals include playing softball at the next level.  She is currently awaiting acceptance and scholarship details to Cal State San Bernardino.  Her career goal at this time is to attain a degree in the area of human development.  Natalie’s advise to future Grizzly athletes is to play every game as if it’s your last and to not take things for granted!

Here’s what Natalie had to say when asked who she would like to thank upon graduating from high school:

“Throughout my high school years many people have contributed to my success.  Thank you to the following people:

  • Dr. Chavez has always motivated me to work hard to have a successful year.
  • Mrs. Conner for always making herself available to in any way she could to make sure I understood her class.
  • Mr. Pola for always helping me get better on the field and showing he believed in me.
  • Coach Sel who brought out my confidence in the field and to always trust myself.
  • Coach Medina for always showing he cared and I stayed on the right path.
  • Mrs. Morgan for always showing how much she cared and supported me through this year.
  • Mrs. Feuerborn who has always taken time to help in this senior school year journey.

THANK YOU TO EVERY TEACHER I’ve ever had at Godinez has impacted my high school years and please know I appreciate every single one of you for the help that I’ve received.”

There is no doubt that Natalie has been a true game changer for Godinez softball over the past 4 seasons!  Thank you to Natalie and her parents for the extreme commitment to be the best softball player she can be as it has helped to elevate our program and provided incredible high school softball memories for us all.  We are going to miss Natalie in the circle and on the field swinging for the fences, but it warms our hearts to know that Nat will be out there at the college level helping to elevate others players and programs.  We will miss you Natalie, but you will most certainly never be forgotten as you are an integral part of Godinez & SAUSD Softball history!

Best wishes to Natalie Carlos – Class of 2020 Female Athlete of the Year!
