Godinez completed their Farewell Tour of the Orange Coast League with a victory over Estancia on Friday night. They finished 5-0 in league for the second consecutive year. Estancia kept it close 24-14 at the half. Getting a couple big plays in the second quarter. But the Grizzlies stepped it up I had he second half out scoring Estancia 21-3. Offensively, led by a balanced attack, they accumulated over 400 yards of offense. Jesse Cendejas led the passing game while Patrick McMorris and Andy Sosa led the running game. Defensively, the defense created 3 turnovers and a TD interception by Izak Verduzco.

Game Recap

Well, the season is over. We ended up 4 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. We finished with a 3 game winning streak. I’m most proud of the way the kids finished the year. They were loose, confident, and eager to perform. We put it all together the last 3 games and it showed on the field. I will never forget this team. Good memories.

Game Summary

1Q

Well, this was our last game of the year and the kids didn't disappoint. We took the opening kick off and drove the ball all the way down and scored a touchdown. It wasn't what we did, but how we did it. Our offense just clicked. We had the ball for over 5 minutes and just dominated the line of scrimmage. 7 to 0.

2Q

In the second quarter, we continued what we started from the first quarter. We were able to shut the Eagles down the whole quarter and we dominated the quarter again. Our biggest play of the quarter was a bootleg pass from our QB to our WR. It was a great catch and set us up to score with only seconds to go before the half. We go into halftime leading 13 to 0.

3Q

In the third quarter, our defense was the star. We had two interceptions to stop Eagle drives and we just had good ball control on offense to end the quarter. 13 to 0.

4Q

More of the same in the 4th quarter. Our defense held fast and we were able to play everyone on the team on both offense and defense. It was a great feeling to see everyone out there. Final score. 13 to 0.

Game Recap

It was a highly emotional game. Too many times, each team had a chance to score but the defense held tight. The final play almost gave me a heart attack. We prevailed, however, and the kids are very excited. One more game to go. Stay tuned….

Game Summary

1Q

We started the game with our second offense again. We were able to move the ball just a little with this team. However, we did not turn the ball over or make any mistakes that would hurt us. After a punt, the Mustangs moved the ball all the way down to our 10 yard line. We were able to stop them short of the endzone and they settled for a field goal. The quarter ended with the Mustangs leading 3 to 0.

2Q

In the second quarter, we had our chances to score on a number of drives but we turned the ball over three times on offense. Two interceptions and one fumble. Our defense held up pretty good and after a long offensive drive, we made it into the end zone on a running play, just before the half ended, and we went into half time leading 7 to 3.

3Q

In the third quarter, we traded drives with the Mustangs and no one was able to score. We recovered a fumble around the goal line and we also had an interception to stop two of their drives. End of the third quarter, Godinez 7 Costa Mesa 3.

4Q

In the fourth quarter, our defense rose to the occasion a number of times. We played our hearts out the whole quarter. In the closing minutes, we recovered another fumble and we were able to run the clock down, on consecutive plays, to 7 secs left when we had to punt the ball. Our punter kicked the ball, that somehow, stayed in bounces and the punt returner almost ran it back all the way to the end zone. We were able to finally tackle him and the clock ran out. Godinez 7 Costa Mesa 3.

Game Recap

In our last game of our season the Grizzlies fell to Costa Mesa. Our season had some fantastic highlights, including a new freshmen, Jude Marting who will only continue to get bigger, stronger, and faster, three great seniors in David Ramos, Jairo Galvan, and Anthony Sanchez, a great defensive player in Nathan Escobedo and an offensive powerhouse in Julian Reyes. Julian set a new school record for most goals in a season with 115, breaking the previous record from 2013 of 99 goals held by Cirenio Gonzalez. Great season, we will see you next year!
