January 2018 Athletes of the Month

Omar Bueno BBall Jan AofM

Boys’ Basketball:    Omar Bueno  12th Grader Current GPA:  3.50  Varsity

“Omar has been an outstanding player for the Grizzlies throughout the pre-season.  He is consistently one of our leading scorers and rebounders.  As the team begins league play, Omar is playing his best basketball of the season.”  Coach Coombs

Julissa Prieto GBBall Jan AofM

Girls’ Basketball:   Julissa Prieto 12th Grader Current GPA:  3.50 Varsity

“Our January AofM for girls’ basketball is Julissa “Shhhulissa” Prieto.  Jewlz is another one of our standout seniors on the team and a true role model for our under classmen.  She’s been a driving force on the court for our team this month.  Against a strong Tesoro High team she has racked up a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Jewlz is just as phenomenal off the court.  She’s a part of the Gold Pride Council, Pink Ribbon Club, Red Cross Club, Girl Scouts and Key Club.  While being this involved here at GFHS and maintaining a part-time job, she’s earning a 4.1 weighted GPA with 4 AP classes!  Outstanding job Jewlz, keep up the GRIND!!!   Coach Alaman

Erick Pineda Boys Soccer Jan AofM

Boys’ Soccer:   Erick Pineda  12th Grader Current GPA: 3.50 Varsity

“Erick is one of the team captains and a leader on and off the field.  He is willing to play different positions on the field in order to help the team.  Erick is also a good student, with a 3.50 GPA in the first semester, and has taken several AP classes.”   Coach Fernandez

Girls’ Soccer:   Emeline & Evelyn Benitez  12th Graders  Current GPA:   4.00 Varsity

“The twins” have not only been on varsity soccer for all four years, but they have also been captains on the team since their freshman year.  To say the team is going to miss them when they graduate is an understatement!  They have given their all to the girls’ soccer program even after both were sidelined from ACL injuries.  They are equally impressive in the classroom, maintaining a 4.00 unweighted & 4.50 weighted GPA!”  Coach MacLennan

Mariana Vivas GPolo Jan AofM

Girls’ Water Polo:   Mariana Vivas 11th Grader Current GPA:  2.83 Varsity

“Mariana Vivas has exploded onto our varsity team this year.  Through her hard work and dedication, she has worked her way up to a starting spot and continues to show improvement during every game.  Mariana has only missed one practice since the season began and comes every night ready to work hard, often finishing in the top 5 for our swim sets and continually chasing down our faster polo players.  Defensively she has made huge improvements in knowing where the ball is and where she needs to be, often leading to turnovers and steals for us.  Offensively she is not afraid to shoot and has become an increasing outside threat as the season has progressed.  Coach Lee and I are looking forward to what the rest of the season may bring and what her final year next season may look like.”  Coach Morris

Rei Hurtado – Boys Wrestling January AofM

Boys’ Wrestling:   Rei Hurtado  12th Grader Current GPA:  2.50  Varsity

“Rei is being recognized for his hard work over the winter break and for placing at one of the toughest tournaments in Santa Ana.  Great work Rei!”   Coach Corona

Girls’ Wrestling:   Gisselle Duarte  12th Grader Current GPA:  3.50  Varsity

“Gisselle is a tough competitor and she is leading the girls’ wrestling team in wins!  Excellent job Gisselle!!”  Coach Corona
